Arbeiterwohlfahrt (AWO)

Arbeiterwohlfahrt (AWO), the worker’s social welfare charity, is an independent organization acting nationwide through 30 subdivided regional branches, 480 branches on the district level and 3.800 local associations. AWO is supported by its about 382.000 members, 70.000 honorary workers and 173.000 full-time employees.

AWO Berlin has about 1.500 full-time employees and about 6.500 members in its branch. Furthermore, about 900 people contribute by honorary work. Honorary offices and volunteering have a long-standing tradition and high significance at AWO. Such commitment enriches our daily work with new experiences, ideas, and motivation. We are happy about each and every person’s commitment helping us to make our society more humane.

As a social welfare charity, AWO is active in different areas of social work, such as support of children and the youth, the handicapped, the homeless, former offenders, senior citizens, as well as further areas to assist in coping with social problems and challenges. Our main focus at all times is to help people to help themselves. Values such as solidarity, freedom, equality, justice, and tolerance form the basis of our actions.
AWO Jugendwerk, which is part of AWO Berlin and active since 1977, takes responsibility for the needs of children and the youth in particular. At AWO Jugendwerk, young adults take action where they suspect social injustice and a disregard of democracy, and where people are discriminated against. At youth centers, in project work and weekend seminars, Jugendwerk informs about topics that directly influence the daily life of children and the youth. They shall thus be empowered to grasp and realize political issues. AWO Jugendwerk enables children and the youth to actively organize their leisure time according to their own ideas and allows them to get actively involved in social structures and argue for their interests and rights.
